These days, Pokljuka offers a fairy-tale winter image that is inviting to winter activities. In Slovenia, skiing, cross-country skiing and sledding are the most popular winter activities. Recently, also winter hiking, snowshoeing and ski touring became popular. In summer, hiking and cycling predominate, and various water activities are popular as well.
The winter idyll can be experienced in several ways. Slovenian ski resorts are connected by a single ski pass, the distances between ski resorts are not large. Most ski resorts are suitable for families. This also applies to the mountain centres of Vogel and Kranjska Gora, and many other smaller ski resorts located near Pokljuka. Slovenia’s largest alpine plateau, where the IBU Biathlon World Championships 2021 takes place, is one of the most popular cross-country skiing destinations with more than 30 kilometres of well-maintained trails. Pokljuka is an excellent starting point for touring skiers and hikers. Snowshoeing to the idyllic Pokljuka mountains has a special charm.
With its natural resources, Slovenia is a real paradise for outdoor experiences in all seasons. More than 10,000 kilometres of maintained and marked hiking and mountaineering trails lead to the scenic alpine peaks, and across the picturesque landscape in the lowlands. A special magnet are long-distance hiking trails, most of them are part of international trails. Popular trails that lead entirely through the Slovenian territory are the Slovenian Mountain Trail and the Juliana Trail.
Slovenia is also an attractive destination for cyclists. Road cyclists face challenges in road ascents and descents on mountain passes. Recreational cyclists and families choose relaxed cycling on well-maintained cycling trails. The varied paths between forests and mountain meadows attract mountain bikers, who can also release their adrenaline in bike parks. In the last year, cycling enthusiasm in Slovenia has been further stirred up by the successes of Slovenian cyclists in the most prestigious races. The most stunning was the double win of Tadej Pogačar and Primož Roglič at the Tour de France.
As Slovenia is a water-rich country, it is an excellent playing ground for water activities. The rapids of the alpine rivers attract seekers of adrenaline adventures. With its biological diversity, Slovenian waters are also attractive for fishermen.
